Yet, there he was doing it again Saturday at East Lake, this time while leading a golf tournament and dealing with an old, but new, set of emotions.

Woods made some changes to the club, along with the 3- and 5-wood, ahead of THE NORTHERN TRUST, returning to the Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana D+ White Board shaft he'd used up until the 2013-14 TOUR season. I've got a three-shot lead.

The man once associated so intricately with winning won again, in the Tour Championship, by two shots over Billy Horschel, who lent Woods's nerves some late inconvenience.

"This whole season has been pretty remarkable considering where I have come from", said Woods.

"Simple math says that if I play a clean card the guys behind me have to shoot 67, so that helps", Woods told reporters after a five-under-par 65 at East Lake. Then, as McIlroy finished up, and before Woods would tap in for par, tap the putter to the ground and raise his arms, he would ward off emotion as he claimed to realize at last one towering "at last".

The victory was Woods' 80th on the PGA Tour, two short of the all-time record held by Sam Snead.

Woods, a two-time victor of the tournament, carded six birdies in his opening seven holes during his third round, opening up a five-shot lead at one stage.

Pitted against Rory McIlroy and world number one Justin Rose, Woods fought off five years of demons to claim the Tour Championship and nearly won the FedEx Cup in the process.

Woods won for the first time in more than five years. It became official: Tiger Woods was back. "I started tearing up a little bit", Woods said. When I go away from it - and, you know, when I was using the Nike putter I always bring it out and hit putts with it. "I felt like I could free-wheel it, and they went in". Heavy rain left the course playing easy, and Woods was one of the players to take advantage of the conditions.

"I was having a hard time not crying coming up the last hole but then I thought I could still blade this thing out of bounds", he smiled.

"All of a sudden it hit me that I was going to win the tournament".
