It gets really weird at the end when we're treated to a close up of Phoenix's Joker face grinning and then suddenly looking serious.

A previous headshot of Phoenix from the film called him Arthur - which fans quickly connected to Arthur Fleck, The Killing Joke's Joker.

Phillips had previously shared a portrait of Phoenix in character, but crucially, without the Joker makeup.

Todd Phillips, the director of the upcoming "Joker" origin movie, took to Instagram on Friday to share new footage of Joaquin Phoenix as the film's title character.

This is a Joker who could nearly pass for a real clown, if not for that look he flashes the camera at the last second. In a sneak peek from Warner Bros.

Joker won't be hitting theaters until October 2019, but it's already generating a lot of buzz.

The brief video clip involves a slow zoom in to Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, his protagonist's pre-Joker form, who's described in the official Warner Bros. plot synopsis as "a man disregarded by society". Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron also star in the pic.
