A new poll out today shows that U.S. Senate Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke leads Sen.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) makes a comment as Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) waits his turn during a debate for Texas U.S. Senate seat at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, U.S., September 21, 2018.

The pair will square off again next weekend in Cruz's hometown of Houston, and a third and final debate is set for San Antonio three weeks before the November 6 election.

Cruz has also criticized O'Rourke's defense of National Football League players who have kneeled at games in protest of police brutality.

"People who became convicts exclusively by dint of the color of their skin in a system that was radically unjust", O'Rourke continued.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll gave O'Rourke a slight edge, with 47 percent to Cruz's 45 percent That came on the heels of a Quinnipiac University survey that showed Cruz up by 9 percentage points.

The debate will be a major test for O'Rourke, a former member of a punk rock band who has become a cause célèbre for many Democrats who believe he can be an effective messenger for progressive policies like marijuana legalization and raising the minimum wage.

Following the debate, O'Rourke told reporters that Cruz "has a tendency to mischaracterize a position" and was making him appear more politically more radical than he is.

"I could care less about any party at this moment", O'Rourke said. Among Texas likely voters who choose a candidate, 93 percent say their mind is made up. During the 2016 presidential race, the moderators reminded the audience, Mr. Trump savagely attacked Mr. Cruz as "Lying Ted", while Mr. Cruz characterized Mr. Trump as an inveterate liar himself.

O'Rourke has built his campaign around healthcare, economic inequality, and resisting Trump and Cruz's immigration policies, as well as calling for some gun-control measures including uniform background checks and banning high-capacity weapons.

Looming over the race is the omnipresence of President Trump.
