The show is set in the unmistakably Jewish milieu of Upper West Side affluence, cigar-chomping garment executives and Greenwich Village cafe culture.

The award went to Rachel Brosnahan for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".

The 46-year-old gay icon, who would have been halfway to an EGOT with the award, said he wanted the show's depiction of Versace and D'Amico's 15 years as partners to "normalise relationships like this". "One of the most important ways that we can find and use our voices is to vote", said Brosnahan, 27. Amazon won five of those, including best comedy series, the first time any streaming platform has captured that award. After missing the Emmy run a year ago due to a delayed season, the hit show won best drama series, and also the best supporting actor in a drama for Peter Dinklage.

Netflix owes a debt of gratitude to its period drama "The Crown", "Black Mirror" episode "USS Callister" (4 wins), TV movie "Godless" (3 wins), the "Queer Eye" reboot (3 wins), and the Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin-led "GLOW" (3 wins).

Rarely has the opening of an awards show felt as inauspicious as the first 10 minutes or so of Monday night's Emmy Awards.

"This wasn't supposed to happen", said a surprised Foy. The Handmaid's Tale stars Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, and Alexis Bledel were all up for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, while Game of Thrones and Westworld were the most-nominated dramas of the year. "She was very busy and she said to me, 'I just can't fly across the country to watch you lose, ' and I still think you made the right decision", said Mulaney, 36.

In a ceremony that started out congratulating TV academy voters for the most historically diverse field of nominees yet, the early awards all went exclusively to whites.

It won nine Emmys this year, meaning the blood-spattered tale of the battle for the Iron Throne - which returns in 2019 for an abbreviated eighth and final season - now has 47 awards overall.

Sherman-Palladino was up against stiff competition in both categories, including last year's victor in the directing category, "Atlanta's" Donald Glover. Vote, show up, and bring a friend to the polls.

Late-night host James Corden joked that the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite should get trending. I'm guilty of that a lot of times.

The cast of "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" poses backstage with their Outstanding Limited Series award.

And "Saturday Night Live" won the award for best variety sketch series.

Yet the warmest applause came when Glenn Weiss used his acceptance speech for directing the televised 2018 Academy Awards show to propose to his girlfriend in the audience, Jan Svendsen. "Because I want to call you my wife", he added to cheers, applause and a few teary-eyed actors in the audience. He showed up with trophies for Jaleel White (yes, Steve Urkel himself), The Jeffersons' Marla Gibbs and Martin's Tichina Arnold, among others.

Both winners and losers have gone home in their limos, the borrowed gowns have gone back to the designers, the statuettes are already on the shelf and the 2018 Emmy Awards are in the books. The tune included a mention of Oh's possible victory: "There were none, now there's one, so we're done", the comedians sang. "Thank you so much for that".

Earlier this year, the series won two Golden Globes.
