While trying to lead a comeback in the fourth quarter, rather than go out of bounds, Garoppolo tried to extend the play and took a big hit from Chiefs Steven Nelson. He pulled up, suffering a non-contact knee injury before taking a hit from the Chiefs defense. To put it bluntly, the Niners' season now rides on whether Beathard can, at least, provide some of the things Garoppolo brings to the table. Everyone in here has a ton of respect for C.J., how he handles himself.

"That's our time in the game", Reid said.

Facing third-and-goal from the Kansas City 20-yard line with just over five minutes left, Garoppolo ran beyond the line of scrimmage in an attempt to reach the end zone. "They're going backward and we're going forward and it's all good". "I just talked to (Garoppolo) in the training room", Beathard said. The Chiefs are now 3-0 and Mahomes has the most touchdowns (13) through the first three games of a season in National Football League history.

"I'm not anxious at all about C.J.", Kittle said. "We're going to fight for you, no matter what'".

"He's a hell of a quarterback", Kittle said of his former Hawkeye teammate.

"Coach Shanahan has the highest standards for every single person on the team, especially C.J. That's why they took him in the third round, they thought so highly of him".

Of course, this second turn as the starter also comes with far more in the way of expectations.

"We will think about that later", he said, "But I am definitely happy with the guys we got".

The 49ers' defensive players spent the run-up to Sunday's game criticizing their Steelers counterparts for the miscues and "busts" that led to the Chiefs throwing six touchdowns in a Week 2 win.
