Hurricane Florence Grows Stronger, Heads Toward US East Coast

The hurricane's maximum sustained winds have increase to near 140 km/h with higher gusts. As of Saturday morning the hurricane was 1280 miles east of Honolulu.

NHC forecasters say that this general motion is expected to continue today. Some spots could see a half-foot of rain over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Again, the center of the storm and the eye wall of the hurricane has the most violent wind, but the flood threat from rainfall and storm surge can affect areas hundreds of miles away. Florence has regained hurricane... OPCON4 means that the counties are on "alert" status and "county officials have begun discussions with South Carolina Emergency Management, coastal communities including local municipalities, and will continue to monitor the situation closely", according to a release from Horry County Director of Public Information Kelly Moore.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency in advance of the front on Saturday afternoon. No evacuations have been ordered yet, however.

The storm is heading west at 7 miles per hour and packing maximum-sustained winds of 40 miles per hour.

Finally, Tropical Storm Isaac has developed east of the Lesser Antilles and is strengthening.

Tropical Storm Florence is becoming a "better organized" weather system that will likely strengthen into a hurricane late Saturday, weather forecasters said. A Category 4 hurricane can cause power outages that last for weeks to possibly months, the hurricane center said.

The coast can expect tropical storm-force winds as early as Wednesday night and likely Thursday morning, with the highest probability of winds in the Carolinas.

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to become a hurricane tonight and continue to strengthen during the next few days, while Florence and Helen have both been upgraded to hurricanes.

"Since we are near the peak of hurricane season, this is a good time for everyone who lives in a hurricane-prone area to ensure they have their hurricane plan in place", hurricane specialist David Zelinsky wrote in a forecast advisory.

The hurricane center warned that "swells generated by Florence are affecting Bermuda and will reach portions of the U.S. East Coast over the weekend".

Florences effects were already being felt along the coast, with unsafe swells and rip currents in some spots.
