The eight-episode adaptation of the best-selling medieval fantasy book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski centre on Cavill's character Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as a "Witcher".

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. had tried to enlist Henry Cavill for a cameo in the upcoming Shazam film, but conversations broke down along the way, and that apparently closed the door on other potential Superman appearances further down the line.

It may be time for Henry Cavill to hang up the cape and comb back the spit-curl. Cavill has portrayed Superman in three films - origin story Man Of Steel, followed by superhero team-ups Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and last year's Justice League.

Contract talks between Cavill's reps and Warner Bros are also believed to have broken down. "There's a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn't work". The studio, meanwhile, is focusing more on a Supergirl origin story, which would feature a teen superheroine.

Justice League ended its theatrical run with a worldwide box office total of $657,924,295, meaning it stands as the lowest grossing film of the DC Extended Universe.

The latest report also claims that WB is concentrating on the planned Supegirl movie, at the expense of Superman himself. If Cavill is out, it looks like the two founding pillars of Warner Bros' DCEU might be leaving crimefighting behind. "This effectively removes an actor of Cavill's age from the storyline's equation given that Superman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore".
