But the gunman eventually tracked him down and killed him near Bear Mountain Sports, which is close to the trucking business. He chased a person who had witnessed the shooting and killed that person, too. When the suspect was pulled over and confronted, he fatally shot himself in the chest.

Six people died in a short amount of time, he added.

Sheriff Youngblood later told reporters his team was carrying out an investigation into the mass shooting.

Kern County Sheriff's deputies gather near the scene in Bakersfield California, where a man shot five people dead.

Officers responded to calls of a shooting at a trucking business just after 5pm (local time), Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said during a news conference today.

The husband then went to another location on Breckenridge Road where he confronted two males at a residence and shot them.

According to the sheriff, the gunman used at least a single handgun, though he does not know yet if he had other weapons at his disposal. The woman was riding with her child.

Authorities said six people - including the gunman - are dead following a rampage in East Bakersfield Wednesday evening. "Obviously there's some type of situation that caused the husband to be completely upset", he said.

Police recovered a pistol at the scene. The suspect went with his wife together to the business to confront the man, he added.

"This is the new normal", said deputy Donny Youngblood. The shootings were apparently not random.

The names of the victims or the gunman have not been released.

Authorities have not determined a motive in Wednesday's shooting spree in Bakersfield, however, they are confident a connection between the gunman and all five victims will be found.
