Following defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea to start the season, Arsenal made it back-to-back wins by seeing off West Ham and then Cardiff City 3-2 before the worldwide break.

Monreal has established himself as an important player for Unai Emery at Arsenal, featuring in all four Premier League games so far this season.

Emery is busy preparing his side for the weekend trip north to take on Rafa Benitez's Newcastle side as the Gunners look to build on their recent away win over Cardiff City.

"I have a very good relationship with Mesut and professionally I push him for improvements to give us the best in his qualities and performances".

Ozil's retirement from global football came after he made claims of racism from the German football association.

"First, I knew Monreal in Spain when he was playing in Osasuna and in Malaga", Emery said.

"We are continuing our process with our positive things and our work".

Emery confirmed Arsenal are keen to extend Nacho Monreal's stay at the Emirates Stadium.

Gazidis made the decision for Emery to succeed Arsene Wenger, having overseen a restructure at the club by bringing in head of relations Raul Sanllehi from Barcelona and former Borussia Dortmund scout Sven Mislintat as head of recruitment.

Ozil, 29, has endured a hard start to the new season with the recent national team debacle that saw him declared his unavailability for Germany.

Emery insists that he has known the Spanish global for a long time, seeing him from close quarters during Monreal's time in Spain with Malaga and Osasuna. He is very convinced about that in my conversations with him about it.
