Detroit Lions vs. New York Jets

New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold will make his NFL debut on Monday Night Football against Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions. The Jets finished 2017 at 5-11 in the cellar of the AFC East and will open this year with a rookie starting at quarterback, but Detroit isn't exactly an overwhelming favorite as it begins its own season under the direction of a rookie head coach. Darnold threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns, and the Jets also scored on defense and special teams.

As for running back, Isaiah Crowell's bruising running style is a compliment to Bilal Powell's elusive rushing and pass-catching abilities. NY forced a three-and-out and Roberts returned a punt 78 yards down the left sideline to make it 38-17 with 6:57 remaining in the third quarter.

While Darnold and the offense were finding their groove, the Jets defense was dominating. The Jets took a 17-10 lead into halftime, and after the Lions briefly tied it up in the third quarter, NY scored 31 unanswered points.

NY scored on the ground and through the air, on defense and on a punt return by former Lion Andre Roberts. The second was a highlight reel throw to Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson for a 41-yard score that put the Jets up 17-7. But along with that, they should expect him to move on, learn from mistakes and get better at helping them win games. And the Jets turned their night of high hopes and great expectations into honest-to-goodness positive results, sprinting to a 48-17 triumph over the Detroit Lions before a "Monday Night Football" television audience. Darnold was still holding the ball while talking briefly with Stafford on the field. "He's got a lot of enthusiasm and he has a lot of respect for the game and the people around him".

And if the Lions come out with unfamiliar packages to confuse Darnold, Bowles said the Jets will just adjust. And obviously there's a constant communication with the players to say, 'Are we good on this? "Everybody studied." He said they were able to figure out their tendencies based on formation and signals. At one point, the Jets were down three of their top five defensive back due to injuries.
