The Dallas Police Department announced Monday that it has fired Amber Guyger, a white, female police officer accused of shooting and killing her black neighbor, Botham Jean, after allegedly mistaking his apartment for her own.

Amber Guyger's employment with the police department was terminated Monday following a hearing.

Police said in a news release that she was sacked after an internal investigation found she had engaged in "adverse conduct" when she was charged with manslaughter.

Amber Guyger was charged with manslaughter in connection with the September 6 shooting death of 26-year-old Botham Jean.

Under civil service rules, Guyger has the right to appeal her discipline, the statement reads.

"As an employer, DPD can compel Officer Guyger to provide a statement during a DPD administrative investigation and those statements given to DPD could potentially compromise the criminal investigation", Hall said in a written statement. I don't want to interfere with the on-going criminal investigation into her actions, ' she said.

Guyger, who was hired by the department in November 2013, had been assigned to the city's Southeast Patrol Division.

Reports indicate that Guyger realized she was in the wrong apartment only after calling 911 to report the altercation. Her arrest warrant says the door was ajar, and that she opened it when she inserted her key, saw a dark silhouette across the room, and fired her weapon after he ignored her commands.

Some of the demonstrators rolled empty coffins as they marched outside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, ahead of Sunday's Cowboys game to protest recent fatal police shootings.

The Dallas County medical examiner's office said Jean died of a gunshot wound to the chest and abdomen. But the victim's family disputed her account and said she had been attempting to get into Jean's apartment.

This is a developing story.
