The event is the third of four tournaments in the PGA Tour's end-of-year FedEx Cup Playoffs and featured a field of 69 players from the top of the playoff standings. Woods finished Saturday with another four-under round, then waited out the rain on Sunday and teed off Monday at -12.

Keegan Bradley prevailed Monday at rain-soaked Aronimink Golf Club to beat Justin Rose in a playoff to win the BMW Championship.

"In order to win out here you've got to be consistent and on a golf course like this, even par is not going to do a whole lot, " Woods said.

Spieth, 25, came into the week in the top 30 in points but couldn't recover from a second-round 71 in which he was one of just six players to shoot over par.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland ended up fifth at 18 under after a 68 in which he hit the ball well from tee to green but continually missed makeable putts.

Rose will be one of the leaders on the European team to play the United States at the Ryder Cup in Paris later this month.

That kind of scheduling certainty is why he was so focused on qualifying for the Tour Championship, and why he really gave some thought to the benefits of what could have been a rain-shortened event.

Perhaps most important of all to Woods - the Tour Championship offers another chance for a victory, where he will need to defeat just 29 players.

"I turned pro at 18 and it took me 20 odd years to get to world No 1, but my advice would be to just dedicate yourself to improving, to learning, to trying to get better". Players are also competing for part of a $9 million purse. Woods, coming back from injury, made the Tour Championship for the first time since 2013.

Rose's journey to the top of the world rankings was a 20-year process having turned professional shortly after his memorable finish at The Open in 1998, and he insisted he still has the desire to keep improving and winning.
