And, the latest update of Google Maps, version 5.0, is available on the App Store.

You've been wanting it for years, and Apple finally said it was coming in 2018, and now it's upon us: The mass exodus from Apple Maps to Google Maps. It can be downloaded now on the App Store for free. You will see an app screen where Google Maps will have appeared.

Arguably more valuable, though, is the synchronization between Google Maps for CarPlay, the regular iOS app, and Google Maps in the browser. So, you won't have to Apple necessarily use Apple Maps when plugging your iPhone into the car's infotainment system. Last year, Google added a different "find parking" option in 25 USA markets that reveals parking lots and garages near your destination once you type in that address. You just speak your destination, and Google figures out the rest.

iOS 12 is available to download right now for a score of iPhone and iPad models. Google's other navigation app, Waze, is now testing its CarPlay version in beta. And then voila, you aren't stuck with Apple Maps in your auto anymore. Open Settings, go General and then CarPlay.

Google Maps for iOS has been updated this morning and with it brings one of the most anticipated updates: Google Maps support for Apple CarPlay. In an interview with TechCrunch in June, Apple Senior Vice President Eddie Cue revealed that the company had made "a huge investment of making millions of changes, adding millions of locations, updating the map and changing the map more frequently".

With such improvements in the works, it will be interesting to see whether or not Apple improves its Maps enough to prevent users from replacing it with other navigation options such as Google Maps and Waze.
