By now most of you have probably heard the news about Bill Cosby today, but if not, it was announced on Tuesday that he'll be serving 3-10 years in a state prison for drugging and sexually assaulting Andréa Constand in 2004. He considers the case weak, citing the yearlong delay, Constand's continued contact with Cosby, and the failure of other accusers now coming forward to have ever filed a police complaint. Chelsea Handler joked that when Cosby is released, he will be nominated for to the Supreme Court.

As the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania pointed out in their sentencing memorandum asking for the maximum prison time, "These assaults spanned decades and demonstrate an ingrained pattern of criminality".

A defense psychologist testified at Bill Cosby's sentencing Tuesday that the chances of the comedian committing another sex offense are "extraordinarily low" because he is old, blind and needs help getting around.

"The suggestion that Mr. Cosby is unsafe is not supported by anything other than the frenzy", Green said, as demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse.

Constand stood at Steele's side but shook her head to say she had no comment.

The judge then cleared the courtroom before Cosby was handcuffed and escorted to jail.

In preparation for his sentencing decision, Judge Steven O'Neill declared Cosby a "sexually violent predator" and must undergo lifetime counselling and report quarterly to authorities.

The Cosby case "really raised awareness of the pervasiveness of ... sexual misconduct against subordinates and against women of relatively less power", said Daniel Filler, dean of Drexel University's law school.

Prison officials will process Cosby at the nearby state prison in Schwenksville before determining in which of Pennsylvania's 22 male prisons he will serve his sentence, prison spokeswoman Amy Worden wrote in an email.

But Cosby's camp remained defiant, lashing out at the district attorney and denying that the star was given the right to a fair trial.

More than 50 women have accused Cosby of sexual abuse going back decades, with most complaints too old to prosecute.

As the allegations mounted, his career all but collapsed, "Cosby Show" reruns were taken off the air, and one college after another stripped him of his honorary degrees.

He's gone from "The Cosby Show" to "Predator". He quoted from victim Andrea Constand's own statement to the court, in which she said Cosby took her "beautiful, young spirit and crushed it".

A forensics expert who analyzed the recording told Cosby's defense team that it was "not a true representation of the original content or conversation", according to Camille Cosby's statement.

Judge also ruled Cosby a "sexually violent predator".

The judge is expected to sentence Cosby later Tuesday. They had also asked the judge to levy a $US25,000 ($35,000) fine on Cosby and make him pay court costs. "He robbed me of my health and vitality, my open nature, and my trust in myself and others", Constand's statement said.
