Tiger, McIlroy in ‘deep end’ early in 100th PGA duel

Suddenly a golf tournament no longer seemed important.

But the PGA? It's just a kind of Tour event on steroids.

"It was hard to partner Tiger with guys 15-20 years ago", Furyk said on the eve of the PGA Championship at Bellerive. Coming to this course, however, makes him reflect on that fateful day back in 2001. And I know it has to do with timing and being able to get everything there at the same time, and as an amateur, that's what you're looking for: How are they able to generate the power and the distance? "I had done an American Express clinic there, here in town".

And all these good players you see now, these superstars will now play the ball one way or the other. Before, I didn't really have any of those issues early in my career because I didn't have a fixed point in my back.

This may help explain why Woods' has a starkly different Ryder Cup record in the three formats used in the competition.

As he remembers that day and the decision to cancel the event, Woods says Finchem made the right call. That player was Tiger Woods.

"I'm giving myself chances almost every week", McIlroy said Tuesday.

The amount of time he has to prepare is certainly not ideal, but Woods noted that he has to balance practice time with being prepared physically. "I might put a few noses out of joint by saying, but in my opinion, (he's) the best player that's ever played the game", said Bjorn. "A lot of reflecting".

Combined with forecasted humidity of at least 60 per cent throughout the week, four-time victor Woods expects Bellerive to be a bomber's paradise. This is the last time the event will be held in the month of August, as it is being moved to May starting in 2019.

One thing there's no doubting and that is Woods determination.

Woods no longer has that luxury.

It looks like he has been trying to fix it. Rory has a golf game based on his driver swing. Please like us as much as the Masters! "When the tragedies happened on the 11th and I drove home on the 13th, and I reflected if I had been part of that, what would our foundation be".

"Obviously, to see Francesco winning The Open was a fantastic moment for Francesco, but when you sit on the sidelines as captain, you want to see guys do well in the big championships", Bjorn said. I said it has to be along the lines of how I grew up.

That discussion led him to open his first learning lab in Anaheim.

"That one drive changed our entire directive with my foundation", Woods said.

Furyk already has played some practice-roundholes with some of his prospective players, including the polarizing mad scientist Bryson DeChambeau, who was over-the-top criticized for a temper tantrum he threw while practicing after a disappointing opening round at the British Open last month. This should have the benefit of reducing the likelihood that a PGA Championship will be played in a blast furnace, and might also get rid of the appendix feel that the event has dangling in the dog days of summer the way it does now.

Dealing with all the noise would be more exhausting than playing five of six weeks - the current expected schedule - but Woods has always been good about shutting out such distractions and going about his business.

"He's in a place where it's going to go "boom" and then he's going to start winning a lot of golf tournaments again, and that's actually pretty good fun to watch".
