Statewide West Nile risk level is raised to moderate

Bureau, Putnam & Marshall County Health Department confirmed that mosquitoes collected in Henry and near Putnam recently have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

A batch of bugs collected in Salem on August 9 tested positive for West Nile Virus, a state lab found. Salem's health division said in a statement August 17 that residents should be assured "we are monitoring the situation closely".

"The hot, humid weather in MA combined with frequent heavy rainfall has provided flawless conditions for mosquito species carrying West Nile Virus to breed", said Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel, MD, MPH.

Dress - Wear light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants. If you need to move a dead bird precautions should be taken. These usually develop two to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

"If ever a pet is demonstrating the signs of West Nile virus, which are confusion, seizures, paralysis, it is much more likely that something else is going on than West Nile, and a person ought to go out and consult their veterinarian immediately", explained Sharon Harvey, the President and CEO of the Cleveland Animal Protective League. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

"All residents, regardless of their location, should protect themselves and their families against mosquito bites".

Fort Bend County Health and Human Services will continue to monitor the number of mosquito samples testing positive for mosquito-borne diseases. Fix or replace screens that have tears or other openings.

Residents are also being urged to check screens on windows and doors at their homes for holes that mosquitoes can get through.

Animal owners should reduce potential mosquito breeding sites on their property by eliminating standing water from containers such as buckets, tires, and wading pools - especially after heavy rains.
