McSally, Sinema to run for Flake’s Senate seat in November

That's the only shot that obviously Republicans have to hold on to the seat, but it's even hard then. While the 2018 midterms are favoring Democrats, the Arizona race will be a tough climb.

Both Senate candidates have compelling personal stories. "Arizonans are also reflecting on Senator John McCain's lifetime of service and the example he has set for us", she said. And in Oklahoma's runoff elections, Republicans will select their gubernatorial nominee. Democrats are eyeing this race as a potential flip this year.

Ms McSally beat Ms Kelli Ward, a former senator, and Mr Joe Arpaio, a former county sheriff. "It seems like she wouldn't be intimidated", Ruguone said. On the GOP side, Rep. Ron DeSantis is hoping an endorsement from Trump can buoy him over establishment favorite Adam Putnam, the state's agriculture commissioner. Trump has not endorsed in the race, but he has had praise for McSally. His strong support from the northern panhandle through the Gulf Coast in the South could prove that a tweet is mightier than the door knock.

Both parties have their sights on flipping two Arizona House seats in November as well.

"Congresswoman McSally has spent this long, nasty intra-party fight burning her campaign's resources and squandering her credibility with the voters who will decide this election", said David Bergstein, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. A united Democratic Party in Florida is vital to break the nearly two decades-long GOP rule in Tallahassee, and with at least seven Republican-held congressional districts at play to flip, control of Congress may hinge on it as well.

The open Senate race is among the nation's most competitive, and is consequential for a state that is on the cusp of electing its first woman senator. The GOP establishment hopes McSally can hold off far-right candidates Ward and the controversial Arpaio. Trump won Democratic Rep. Tom O'Halleran's 1st District by 1 point, and Republicans have a crowded primary to see who will face him.

Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, who has served three terms and is from Phoenix, also defeated her rival, Deedra Abboud, a progressive activist and attorney from Scottsdale. She's expected to emerge from the three-way race, but it hasn't been pretty. On the Democratic side David Garcia was the projected victor, thrilling liberals who hope he can mobilize the state's Hispanic population in November.

McSally calls suggestions that she's changed on Trump - whom she criticized while running for re-election during 2016 in a district that voted for Hillary Clinton - "a false narrative".

With no runoff required, the victor will immediately have to shore up support within the party.

Gov. Rick Scott, a close political ally of Trump, is expected to coast through his primary bid for Senate, setting up a showdown with Democratic Sen. The big drama will be in the primaries to replace Scott. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum could surprise Democrats here.

"This is how I see this campaign", McSally said. CNN rates the race Lean Democrat. But Democrats were in a festive mood, as results showed that voter turnout, usually damp in mid-term elections, had edged up by around 5 per cent according to Ms Felecia Rotellini, the party's state chairman. CNN ranks eight Florida races as vulnerable in November, only one of which is now held by a Democrat.

In Oklahoma, the race for governor between former Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and businessman Kevin Stitt could hinge on which candidate voters believe is more loyal to Trump.
