Several senior DMK leaders, including working president M.K. Stalin and his estranged elder brother M.K. Azhagiri, were at the hospital. "All the government offices, schools, and colleges will be closed tomorrow", read the govt statement.

The transition from Annadurai to Karunanidhi is a rallying point not just for the DMK, but also for the state's politics.

Karunanidhi was admitted to Chennai's Kauvery Hospital on July 28 following a dip in his blood pressure.

Doctors at the Kauvery Hospital announced his death in a press release. The 2006 Assembly elections saw Karunanidhi without an independent majority for his DMK but the master tactician still managed to form a single party government ensuring that his allies ended up giving only outside support but not getting a share in power.

1957: First elected to the Assembly from Kulithalai, the first of 13 times he was to be elected to the House in his lifetime. The Tamil Nadu government said that the five-time chief minister wil be accorded a state funeral.

He was known for drawing foreign investors to India's second largest state economy, and oversaw the state becoming an industrial powerhouse, credited with opening many industrial and technology parks.

July 1953: Arrested for the "Kallakudi Agitation", demanding renaming of Dalmiyapuram railway station as part of the anti-Hindi agitation, along with poet Kannadasan and others; Karunanidhi was convicted for six months for that stir. But Karunanidhi was born to be a politician and his flirtation with cinema was to expand the scope of his politics. It will then be kept at his CIT Colony residence between 1 am and 3 am, and then at Rajaji Hall from 4 am, DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led tributes to the veteran leader.

He founded the first student wing of the Dravidan Movement- Tamil Nadu Tamil Manavar Mandram and also started a newspaper- Murasoli on Aug 10, 1942. The Congress leader said in his passing India has lost a "great son".

"As the DMK began to engage in electoral politics, the hard edge of social reform in its films was softened and the films increasingly became vehicles for promoting the party as such rather than reform ideology". He was survived by two wives.
