It is believed that West Bromwich Albion forward Salomon Rondon will complete a move to Tyneside early this week for a fee in the region of £17 million.

He made just one league appearance for PSG last season, but looks likely to be more involved this term as Tuchel places his faith in youth.

News of the Muto signing being finalised comes after Benitez was quoted by The Chronicle after Wednesday night's 4-0 friendly loss at Braga that he was "really worried" about transfers.

Newcastle finished an impressive 10th on their return to the Premier League last season despite what Benitez saw as a lack of investment in the playing staff.

The Toon's frugality in the transfer market has been a source of frustration for their loyal fans for many years, with owner Mike Ashley repeatedly unwilling to fork out sums for players. "I think we still need three or four players".

The club spent are set to spend £9.5m on Yoshinori Muto, £4m on goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, Chelsea's Kenedy arrived on loan and Ki Sung Yueng on a free transfer.

So far this summer Newcastle have sold Mikel Merino to Real Sociedad for £10mn, Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham for £22mn, Chancel Mbemba to Porto for £8mn and Matz Sels to Strasbourg for £3.5mn.

Newcastle United have bolstered their attack with the addition of Japan worldwide Yoshinori Muto. I don't know whether they were going to sign anybody on or not.

Information from The Associated Press and Reuters was used in this report.

And when then asked if there were players close to coming in, he said: "I have no idea".
