Despite no new arrivals for the first season at their brand new stadium, Pochettino feels they can still go on to do great things this term.

The north London club were prepared to offload the trio this summer but ultimately retained them after failing to find adequate replacements.

"I am with full energy, I am fitter than last season because I was thinking if a player involved in the World Cup arrives not fit then I have a possibility to play", the former Argentina global defender said at the club's training ground.

Pochettino added: "What the club is doing is showing it is so courageous. We finish the lodge at the training ground".

With the window closing two days before Spurs play their opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle, Pochettino looks set to enter the season with the same squad as finished the last one.

"Building a stadium that is almost £1 billion". And then with Brexit it is worse because the cost is 30 per cent more.

Their failure to bring anyone in is the first time a Premier League club has not made a signing in the 15 years of the summer transfer window.

"If all the players today are thinking in a collective target, we can be competitive. That is the key this season".

Alderweireld's teammates Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele were also expected to leave the club this summer but failed to get their moves over the line before the transfer deadline.

But Pochettino has warned that he will demand full commitment from anyone who is still at the club after the continental window closes.
