Israel, Palestinian Territories: Security Forces Kill 2 Hamas Fighters

The Israeli authorities said that Israeli military came under fire from Gaza, followed by a tank, the Israeli military opened fire on the checkpoint crews "Izzedine al-Qassam" in Northern Gaza.

The Israeli army said in a statement that "terrorists" had fired shots towards its soldiers "near the northern Gaza Strip from a Hamas post". The IDF said it launched the strike in response to fire coming from the Gaza Strip.

"Israeli forces have operated with near complete impunity for so long that unlawful killings and other flagrant violations of worldwide law have become the norm", Ayed Abu Eqtaish, Accountability Program director at DCIP said in the report.

An Israeli official told Israeli media that no agreement with Hamas would take place without the release of two Israeli civilians, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, and the bodies of two soldiers, Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin. The video then cuts to separate footage of a shell hitting the post and an explosion.

The two Palestinians killed were members of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement, the Palestinian Maan news agency reported.

Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas have fought three wars with Israel since 2008.

More than 160 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces - most during weekly protests at which thousands of Palestinians have expressed their support for the declared right of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral homes in what is now Israel.

The first half of 2018 has been deadly for Palestinian children, with at least 35 children killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip, according to Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCIP).
