Reacting to Trump's tweet, fellow athletes, sports writers and fans jumped to James' defence and criticised the USA president, while Jordan also offered his support. "It's always been something that brings someone together".

That criticism drew the ire of the President, who was critical of James and Lemon in a tweet sent out late Friday evening.

Basketball star LeBron James recently opened a school for at-risk kids in his hometown and he granted an interview to CNN to talk about why he established the institution.

"What I've noticed over the past few months (is) he's (Trump) kinda used sports to kinda divide us, and that's something that I can't relate to", James told Lemon. "He's doing an fantastic job for his community", said Jordan, according to CNN.

Following the tweet, Jordan released a statement to The Associated Press on Saturday via his spokesperson.

CNN, which Trump has repeatedly said is a purveyor of "fake news", then mocked the president and first lady about their television viewing habits and even slighted Melania's #BeBest platform.

The statement didn't criticize the president.

OH governor John Kasich, a Republican like Trump, and former newscaster Dan Rather also criticized the President's tweet about James.

Grisham added the first lady "would be open to visiting" James' new school.

CNN's Lemon and Don Rather have since responded to the inflammatory remarks by Trump, Rather calling the president a disgrace and Lemon questioning who the "real dummy" is.

Apparently, Donald Trump watched the famous basketball player's interview with Don Lemon and concluded that he is kind of dumb!

Shortly before midnight, he made his thoughts known on what he thought of the LeBron-Lemon conversation.

In 2013, Mr Trump tweeted: "Lebron is a great player and a great guy!"

LeBron's sentiments obviously got under the Donald's skin but this isn't the first time the two have had some bad blood between them.

Others took aim at Trump's controversial immigration policy separating migrant children from their detained families, which saw many minors reportedly held in cages at border facilities. Stephen Curry, who Mr. Trump claimed past year he disinvited from the White House, wrote "Keep doing you" with a link to James' interview.
