China continues 'fair and lawful' business in Iran, despite USA sanctions

In a tweet, Mr Trump warned: "Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States".

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani - who insists that its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful - has accused Mr Trump of waging "psychological warfare", and ruled out face-to-face talks with him while the sanctions remain in place.

They target US dollar financial transactions, Iran's automotive sector and the purchase of commercial planes and metals, including gold.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Wednesday it was hard to imagine new talks with the USA after it lost the trust of the world with its erratic decision-making.

Turkey's Energy Minister Fatih Donmez also said that his country would continue to buy natural gas from Iran.

USA officials have said in recent weeks that they aim to reduce Iran's oil exports to zero as a means of pressuring Tehran to halt its nuclear and missile programmes and involvement in regional conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

"You have all these different pressures and people are getting upset and for the most part, from what we can tell, they're blaming the regime and they're not really blaming the U.S.", Politico foreign affairs correspondent Nahal Toosi said on the Bill Press Show. "There is no doubt about this", Khamenei was quoted as saying in comments that appeared only a day after the new us sanctions took effect.

President Hassan Rouhani hinted last month that Iran could block the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route, if the USA attempted to stop the Islamic Republic's oil exports. "We can't get drawn into a confrontation with America by falling into this war room trap and playing on a battlefield".

While Iran has maintained its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, before the June summit with Trump North Korea had repeatedly threatened to attack the US and South Korea.

Rouhani did not specify what consequences the United States could face, but in the past Iranian officials have threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route in the Middle East, in retaliation for any USA actions.

Lankov said North Korea has been selling arms to Iran at least since the mid-1980s, including missiles used by Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War.

"We are in solidarity with the European Union position, obviously we are closely monitoring this and we are doing everything possible on the diplomatic level to stimulate a direct dialogue between the United States and Iran, and we think that dialogue should always prevail", he said.

Iran has dismissed a last-minute offer from the Trump administration for talks, saying it could not negotiate while Washington had reneged on the 2015 deal to lift sanctions.
