Modric's contributions were recognised with the prestigious Golden Ball award, crowning him the best player at the tournament in Russian Federation.

Suspicions about Modric's future at Real Madrid were further raised on Monday as the Croatian was not seen reporting for first team duty with the other players who played in the World Cup final, Raphael Varane and Mateo Kovacic.

Recall that Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, had stated that any club that is interested in buying Modric, must pay his €750million (£670m/$870m) release clause. "One of recent history's most important players has left".

Modric joined Real Madrid in the year 2012.

Asked about the 32-year-old's future, Lopetegui told reporters: "The president has already said what needs to be said and there's nothing more to say". The 24-year-old Croatia worldwide is keen to play more regularly than he does for Real but the club do not want to sell him because he is a good deputy for 32-year-old Luka Modric.

Early rumours of Modric being linked with a transfer away from Real were initially given short shrift but that stance now appears to have softened with Inter continuing to show interest in a player who lit up the World Cup. He'll be happy with the proposal he receives here.

He will be happy playing football at Real Madrid. "We've enjoyed having him and we'll continue to do so".

"I've not seen that he's gone on strike", Lopetegui said.
