It's ironic that Arrizabalaga is heading to Chelsea to replace Real Madrid-bound Courtois, because just a few months ago he almost simplified the goalkeeper merry-go-round by moving to the Bernabeu himself.

The Blues agreed to sell Courtois to Real Madrid on the condition that they could sign Croatia World Cup star Kovacic, with the deal confirmed by Chelsea on Thursday morning.

Thibaut Courtois hasn't covered himself in glory with the way in which he has forced his move to Real Madrid this summer.

Spain worldwide Kepa became the most expensive goalkeeper of all time last night, when Chelsea announced his £71 million signing from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao.

Modric - victor of the Golden Ball as he helped his national side to the World Cup final earlier this summer - had hoped to meet Real president Florentino President on Wednesday to make his intentions clear.

Then it was announced that 23-year-old Kepa had penned a seven-year contract with Chelsea making him the most expensive goalkeeper in history at 80 million euros ($92 million). But the club has been linked with a new goalkeeper in most recent transfer windows, and tried to sign David De Gea from Manchester United in 2015 only to miss the deadline.

"It's a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life", Kepa told the club's official website. The Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri declined to discuss Courtois or Kepa after his side's final pre-season friendly on Tuesday night, against Lyon at Stamford Bridge.

Due back at Cobham earlier this week, Courtois elected not to report for Chelsea training in order to force through a dream move to Spain. The Croatian midfielder competed with regular Madrid starters Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
