"The air strikes targeted a bus full of school students in the middle of Dahyan market in Saada province while they were going to their school", the official said.

Most of the images of the children hit by this airstrike are so gruesome the broadcasting rules don't allow us to show them - but a warning, the report still contains distressing images.

"(The air strikes) conformed to worldwide and humanitarian laws", the coalition statement said, quoting spokesman Colonel Turki al-Malki.

It said the air strike was aimed at missile launchers used to attack the southern Saudi city of Jizan on Wednesday, where a Yemeni civilian was killed.

The Houthi-controlled health ministry said almost 30 children were killed.

In another video, which appears to show the immediate aftermath of the strike, several children's bodies lie under a blown-up bus.

It was there, as the students sat waiting to resume their journey home on Thursday, that a Saudi-led coalition airstrike hit their school bus.

"Putting children in harm's way is horrific and deplorable and making them pay such a price is unacceptable", said Hodeib.

The Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television quoted a statement by the Saudi-led coalition as saying that "Thursday's airstrikes targeted Iranian-allied Houthi rebels who fired a ballistic missile on Wednesday at the Saudi commercial city in border Jazan region".

The missile was sacked from Amran province in northern Yemen on Wednesday night, the coalition said in a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency.

The Iran-backed Shiite militia has controlled Yemen's northwest, including Saada, since ousting the country's internationally recognized government from the capital, Sanaa, in 2014. "Central Command was not involved in the air strike in Saada".

The Houthis have in recent months ramped up missile attacks against Saudi Arabia, which Riyadh usually says it intercepts.

‏He continued: "The interception resulted in projection of fragments throughout some residential areas, which caused the martyrdom of a Yemeni resident, and injuries to 11 civilians". A hospital supported by the aid group has received "dozens of dead and wounded", adding that "under worldwide humanitarian law, civilians must be protected during conflict".

The ballistic missile was sacked from the northern Yemeni province of Amran towards the southern Saudi city of Jizan, said a coalition statement published by the official Saudi Press Agency. Just one week ago, an air raid in Hodeidah seaport claimed the lives of 55 civilians.

"It's hard to believe we live in a world where children should live in fear of such attacks, yet here we are", she added.

The Yemen war has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced more than 2 million and driven the country to the verge of starvation, according to the United Nations. "Only a political solution can bring the war to an end and reinstate peace in Yemen".
