Some 900 tourists were being evacuated from Indonesia's tiny Gili Islands this morning after a powerful quake struck neighbouring Lombok, killing 91 people and injuring hundreds.

BNPB had previously put the number of dead at 105, including two on the western neighboring island of Bali, which also felt the 6.9 magnitude quake.

"Our hearts go out to those affected and who have lost loved ones".

Ali from Italy is tweeting: "My sister called me from Lombok and she was absolutely terrified, she said she was up a tree after the natural disaster and a tsunami is coming". "A lot of officials were urging people not to panic".

Officials said that almost 8,400 tourists and resort workers had been evacuated from the three Gili islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, where two people died, emptying out a destination popular for its white beaches and turquoise waters.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake Sunday evening had a magnitude of 7.0 and its epicenter was about 2 kilometers (1 mile) east-southeast of Loloan, with a depth of 10.5 kilometers (6 miles).

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told reporters some 200 "domestic and foreign" tourists had already been taken off the islands.

A tsunami warning was issued but was lifted after a few hours.

Authorities say foreign and Indonesian tourists are being evacuated from popular vacation islands off the northwest of Lombok following Sunday's powerful quake that killed at least 82 people.

"This is it for me in Indonesia", she said.

Aid agencies said their current priority was to provide shelter for the terrified residents that are too scared to return to their homes.

A video from the Gili islands shows scores of people pushing and shoving their way onto tiny boats in a bid to reach the mainland.

"It was just a lot of panic because no one knew what was happening".

However, a local search and rescue official said there had been at least one fatality on the Gilis and several injuries.

Plan International Indonesia spokeswoman Dini Widiastuti said the staff immediately sprang into action to assist with the evacuation to higher ground.

K.Shanmugam, the Home Minister of Singapore, who was in Lombok for a conference at the time of the natural disaster, described on his Facebook post how his hotel room on the 10 floor shook violently.

Australia's Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton was on the 12th floor of a Lombok hotel at the time of the quake.

Like its famous neighbor Bali, Lombok is known for beaches, mountains and a lush interior.

"The lower floors we went down there was more damage visible [there] than at the top [floors]". "But people out in the villages or elsewhere haven't been so lucky, unfortunately".

American model Chrissy Teigen, who is staying in Bali with her children and singer husband John Legend, live-tweeted the quake.

She live tweeted the natural disaster to her 10.6m followers.
