WhatsApp group video and voice calling launched

WhatsApp says that its calls are encrypted end-to-end just like its standard messages.

Do note that group calls have a four-member limit, so you can't conduct a large-scale meeting via this route. And while WhatsApp may not offer that, it does give iOS and Android users a way to all communicate in a group call together.

In a post on their blog WhatsApp said: "Over the last couple years, people have enjoyed making voice and video calls on WhatsApp".

This feature is available on both the iOS and Android versions of WhatsApp, so update your app to the latest version and you should be able to see it.

WhatsApp has supported video calling since 2016, but calls were, until now, limited to two participants. After that, you need to click on the "Add participant" icon at the top right corner in the video call interface.

Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp, at its F8 conference in May had announced that WhatsApp plans to launch group calling feature for its users. If not, join me in praying to the server-side gods that it gets enabled for all of us soon.

WhatsApp group audio call can be started in a similar way as group video call. While there was quite a handful of them, one of the major ones shared on stage was group FaceTime calls. While there are existing workarounds to that, we doubt that most people would want to go through the hassle. While beta users could engage in group calls with non-beta users the former couldn't make calls from their end. However, if the third user accepts the call their names will be separated with a comma.
