In the comedy contests, several newer titles garnered top nominations, including "Atlanta", "Glow", "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and Tulsa native Bill Hader's HBO series "Barry".

Samira Wiley and Ryan Eggold will be front and centre Thursday, July 12 at 11:25 a.m. ET/8:25 a.m. PT to announce the 2018 Emmy Awards nominees. "It's good news for us in the industry", said Maury McIntyre, TV academy president.

Just five years after the launch of its first original series, "House of Cards", Netflix ended HBO's 17-year streak as the most Emmy-nominated network. Team TVLine already weighed in with its dream Emmy nominees, but time will tell whether any of our picks actually get the love they deserve. Others in the category include "black-ish", "Silicon Valley", "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt". The actor who portrays Paper Boi, Brian Tyree Henry, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series and Zazie Beetz, who plays Van on the show, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series. If he wins, he will earn the coveted EGOT, having previously won a Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Although it's up for top series honors, it drew only three supporting acting bids for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.

For the most part, though, this year's categories mark a pretty fair representation of TV's best and brightest, while adding drama to the battle that's been brewing to its two foremost bidders for awards prestige. "Atlanta" and Glover had been atop our series and lead actor predictions during the nomination phase, while Hader was No. 1 in guest actor.
