Taylor Swift, James Corden To Star In 'Cats' Movie Musical

The first Broadway version of the musical had the fourth longest run in history, from 1982 to 2000.

The casting announcements come fast and furious during San Diego Comic-Con, and news of new cast members for The Walking Dead and Jordan Peele's next genre-subverting movie seem par for the course, but we're not sure anyone was expecting the names attached to a planned adaptation of the musical Cats. The pair have joined James Corden and Ian McKellen in a newly announced film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway hit Cats, according to multiple trade reports. There's no word on when exactly this one will dance and sing its way into cinemas, but with this cast and Hooper behind the camera it could be looking at an Oscar-friendly late 2019 / early 2020 launch.

It remains to be seen whether Swift, Hudson, Corden, and McKellen will stay true to the spirit of the stage musical and don some skin-tight Lycra of their own, though I wouldn't be surprised. What we do know is that a couple of the film's stars are very famously connected to cats.

Hooper is no stranger to movie musicals, having directed 2012's Les Misérables, which won three Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway.

The 28-year-old Swift, who is touring through the end of November, is one of her generation's highest-grossing singers, but she has also branched out into supporting roles on film.

Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) will direct the film, which has been adapted by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) from Webber's musical.
