Before he was nominated to the D.C. circuit by George W. Bush, he was the former president's staff secretary and worked for Bush during the 2000 Florida vote recount.

Wait 1 second to continue.

We are confident that the Senate will confirm Judge Kavanaugh, and we look forward to Judge Kavanaugh being seated in time for the start of the Supreme Court's new term in October. Politico reported Monday that Hardiman is one of the president's top candidates to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is retiring at the end of July.

By keeping Scalia's seat open, McConnell gave Trump a head start in putting his own stamp on the high court, and the president acknowledged as much when Gorsuch was sworn in previous year.

Shortly after Trump announced his selection at the White House, the Republican Jewish Coalition tweeted: "Congratulations to Judge Brett Kavanaugh and his family". This nomination is one of the most important items that we will consider this year.

Prior to being tapped by Trump, some conservatives questioned Kavanaugh's bona fides, and he's controversial with Democrats because of his role in the Starr investigation of Clinton. Judge Kavanaugh is a brilliant jurist who embraces the philosophy of our Founders - an unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the Constitution.

He is also an enemy of former President Bill Clinton after he investigated his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Trump during his campaign in 2016 said he would appoint justices who would overturn the landmark 1973 decision that said women have a constitutional right to an abortion. Just as I described another name on the final list, Judge Raymond Kethledge, as "Gorsuch 2.0", I think it is accurate to describe Judge Kavanaugh as "Roberts 2.0". He added: "I think they'd be fine justices of the Supreme Court".

But his decision and status as the court's swing vote on a number of social issues left liberals anxious the court would soon become more conservative under Trump's watch. But his supporters cite his experience and wide range of legal opinions. And they certainly want Trump's choice confirmed before the November election, when Democrats have a long-shot chance of retaking the Senate majority.

If Republicans lose the Senate, they would still have control of the chamber until January.

Jones was among the Democratic lawmakers invited to the announcement at the White House but did not attend.

Some Republican senators had favored other options. In the press release, Casey went into detail about his differences with the Heritage Foundation's agenda and labeled them as an "extreme Right organization".

Republicans balked at giving President Barack Obama's nominee a confirmation hearing in 2016, saying it was an election year.

Trump is scheduled to announce a nominee at 9 p.m. Monday. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., a longtime member of the Judiciary Committee. In fact, the only member of "the Supremes" who isn't Catholic or Jewish is Justice Neil Gorsuch, who is Episcopalian.

Two female Republican senators - Maine Sen.

The nominee is an only child who credits his mother for his career path. Martha Kavanaugh taught high school history before returning to school for her law degree.

Blumenthal told Stephanopoulos on "This Week" that the public supports abortion rights.

Kavanaugh once served as a Supreme Court clerk under Kennedy.

Kavanaugh now faces the confirmation process. While it is true that Kavanaugh published an article almost a decade ago arguing that presidents should be exempt from "time-consuming and distracting" lawsuits, he has likewise argued for dramatically narrowing the scope of executive privilege.

While the president has been pondering his choice, his aides have been preparing for what is expected to be a tough confirmation fight.
