Pompeo speaks with Russian FM on Trump-Putin meeting

Kay Bailey Hutchison, the US Representative to NATO said the major theme of the NATO summit would be the trans-Atlantic alliance's "strength and unity".

Each president has tried a reset or a redo of the U.S. -Russia relationship since the end of the Cold War, and in each case, it has led to a boom-and-bust cycle, Huntsman said.

However, Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on those conclusions and suggested the various investigations into Russian meddling were political motivated.

"We have a strained relationship, but we could have a better relationship between he USA and Russian Federation, because there's some common interests around the world that we hopefully can work together on", Shelby said, according to video from the meeting in Moscow.

However, he took issue with President Trump's statement that he planned to discuss Crimea with President Putin there.

Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, who was on the trip, called for Moscow to change its behavior.

He still discussed some areas of disagreement with the US, including President Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran Nuclear Deal.

"What we want from the United States - we want just only respect of our national interest", he stated.

"He has said that he would not rule out recognizing Crimea as part of Russia because the majority of Crimeans speak Russian", she continue.

'You need to go in with eyes wide open, ' he said. Francis said a bipartisan team on the trip would've been best, and she said that the idea of Russian Federation dropping their foreign election-meddling tactics on their own "will never happen".

'And to hold them responsible for this new form of warfare, hybrid warfare that we have seen most recently, ' Huntsman added.
