Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus in Winnebago County

While some West Nile infections can lead to serious health problems, health officials say most people who are infected with West Nile show no symptoms.

"We've seen escalated numbers, heightened numbers of potentially disease-carrying mosquitoes so we're seeing places that are setting records for the number of those particularly mosquitoes", Prather says.

St. Louis County workers routinely check mosquitoes for the virus during the summer to focus their pest control efforts. But health officials warn the presence of mosquitoes with the virus raises the risk for people. About one out of 150 infected people develop swelling of the brain or brain tissue, that in some cases, can result in death.

The mosquitoes that can spread WNV are called Culex quinquefasciatus or the "Southern House" mosquito and can grow to adults in as few as 7 days.

Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn.

Wear lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long trousers while outdoors.

Consider the use of mosquito repellent, according to directions, when it is necessary to be outdoors.

"But you have to use a product that contains Permethrin to do that".

If you have children, keep them away from tasing pools empty or on their sides when they aren't being used. Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water in ver baths weekly.

Rain barrels and other water collection devices must be screened, and collected water should be used within one week.

The Pocket-area canal, which is full of often stagnant water, has been identified as a problem area.

The district's website features a mosquito treatment notification service, plus an interactive map so residents can determine whether they are in the spraying zone.
