It was also chose to keep Maryam in Adiala Jail's women's cell and not in Sihala rest house as suggested earlier.

An accountability court sentenced Nawaz to a total of 11 years in prison and slapped a £8 million fine (Rs1.3 billion) in the corruption reference while his daughter Maryam was sentenced to eight years with a £2 million fine (Rs335 million).

Their swift departure prevented PML-N workers staging a hero's welcome on the streets of Lahore, where Sharif's brother, Shehbaz, led between 10,000 and 20,000 party supporters on a march in defiance of a citywide ban on public gatherings.

Sharif and Maryam were convicted by the Islamabad-based accountability court on July 6 in the Avenfield case linked to the Sharif family's ownership of properties in London.

Since Sharif returned to London last month, where his wife is being treated for cancer, the PML-N has fallen into disarray and failed to mount an organized campaign to rally the base ahead of the polls.

His daughter and son-in-law also were sentenced to prison terms on similar charges.

Local Geo TV said Sharif and his daughter were taken to another waiting aircraft to be flown out of Lahore, where more than 10,000 Sharif supporters were gathered to greet him.

Earlier in April, Pakistan's Supreme Court disqualified the three-time former prime minister from contesting elections for the rest of his life because of his corruption cases as revealed in the Panama Papers leaks case.

Besides Shahbaz Sharif and former prime minister Abbasi, the other leaders booked include Shahbaz's son Hamza, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, PML-N chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, former information minister Maryam Aurengzeb, Senators Mushahid Hussain Syed and Musadiq Malik, former interior minister Talal Chaudhry, veteran politician Javed Hashmi, former parliamentarian Uzma Bokhari and Saira Afzal Tarar.

"Why is Lahore under siege?"

Meanwhile, two separate bomb attacks were reported in Pakistan today.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Maryam Nawaz, who was arrested along with her father Nawaz Sharif upon their arrival in Lahore, has said that she is in prison for being the daughter of a courageous man. This was Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first visit to Pakistan.

His daughter and political heir was given seven years in prison for failing to prove that money used to buy luxury flats in London in the 1990s was not ill-gotten.

The Sharifs, who have had a rocky relationship with Pakistan's powerful military, have cast the sentences as part of a conspiracy to stifle their power before the nationwide general elections in less than two weeks.

The PPP senior leader, in his statement, said that he had not seen such a betrayal in entire political history.

He has accused a covert military-judiciary alliance of trying to keep him out of politics and of undermining the integrity of his PML-N party. "This is a case of corruption and Sharif is not entitled to A class facilities".

The aim of explosions is to delay the elections by creating panic and inflicting loss, he said and added his party will not stop the rallies. His brother Shehbaz became PML-N's president, but Sharif remains the power behind the throne.

PML-N has also been shaken by internal divisions.
