United are reported to be receiving an initial £14 million (A$25 million) for the Ajax academy product, but the fee could eventually rise to £18.5 million (A$33 million).

But United have sold the Netherlands global back to Ajax for an initial €16 million (£14.1m), which will rise to €20.5m (£18.1m) after bonuses.

Blind would be United's first high-profile sale of the summer - although captain Michael Carrick has retired and joined Mourinho's coaching staff.

He will become Ajax's record signing and returns to the club a year after playing against them in United's Europa League final win in Sweden.

Blind has struggled to stake a claim in the United starting line-up since the arrival of Jose Mourinho two seasons ago.

The Dutchman followed his former Holland manager Louis van Gaal to Old Trafford after the last World Cup after impressing as a versatile player who could operate at centre-back, left-back and, occasionally, in defensive midfield.

Blind, should he complete the move, will become the second Premier League player to swap the Premier League for Ajax this summer, following the earlier acquisition of Serbian forward Dusan Tadic from Southampton. He was part of four title winning teams with Ajax.

He said: "I think Daley is a fantastic player".
