Reaching the final caps a hugely impressive 2018 for Lovren, who came through a hard run of form for Liverpool to play a key part in reaching the UEFA Champions League final in May.

Klopp feels the positive arc of the defender's past season is just reward for a player he believes can still improve further, too.

Less than two months after lining up for Liverpool in the Champions League final, he is now heading for the biggest match in global football.

Lovren, whose nation are into the semi-finals for the first time since 1998, said Croatia could play with freedom.

"[In Croatia] we went through a lot of s***, war, all these things and even now the situation is not the best".

"It's something special for me", Lovren said regarding the feat.

"I really didn't understand these questions, always looking back to where I made some mistakes".

"But we enjoy to play against big teams, as we showed against Argentina, and have nothing to lose".

If Vrsaljko does not make it, one option for Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic will be to bring Vedran Corluka into central defence and push Domagoj Vida out to right-back. England controlled the game more or less, Croatia looked exhausted in that part of the game - and then they scored a goal and got a real push. "I wish we could both be in the final for that game but there is only one victor".

And the Liverpool defender has praised Croatian parents for "making good love" and giving the small country several sports stars. They are a strong team, their players play all over the world.

Oblak has established himself as one of the world's very best goalkeepers during his four years with Atlético Madrid and the Slovenian global would represent a major summer coup for Liverpool, if a deal can be struck. "I'm happy for them of course".
