Iran: If Trump wants to talk, he'll have to call

When the administration announced it was withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, it imposed several new sanctions, including ones that will require all countries to eliminate Iranian oil imports by November.

Iran has filed a complaint at the International Court of Justice against the USA on re-imposition of sanctions, the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

Instead, according to the diplomats, Pompeo and Mnuchin wrote that the U.S. wanted to create "unprecedented financial pressure" until Iran makes a "tangible, demonstrable and sustained shift" in policies. "It's imperative to counter its habit of violating global law", he wrote.

While Germany, France and Britain didn't withdraw from the landmark 2015 nuclear accord with Tehran, the global financial system is so interconnected and so tied to NY that it is nearly impossible for anyone anywhere in the world to continue their business with Iran without risk of violating USA sanctions.

Under nuclear deal Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.

India side informed Iranian authorities that it has not taken any final decision on "complying" with the United States sanctions and would like to continue engagement with the Americans.

Sources said India may request the USA to consider providing it some waiver from the sanctions on import of Iranian oil.

Since the 2015 deal, Iran has purchased yellowcake from Kazakhstan and Russian Federation, as well as mined its own domestically.

Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said while Iran is an age-old partner, with the U.S. also India's has a special strategic relationship. USA sanctions will snap back in two parts, with a first round returning in August, and with the harshest sanctions returning in early November.

Iran and the other signatories to the 2015 agreement have been scrambling to preserve the limited trade deals they were able to secure since it was signed.

Pompeo said the goal is to deny Iran resources to support terrorism and continue its aggressive behavior around the world.

Austrian ambassador Stefan Scholz, whose country now holds the presidency of the European Union, said "unorthodox and innovative measures" were being considered to allow banking transactions to continue after United States sanctions return.

"After receiving the viewpoints of Iranian and foreign worldwide attorneys and legal advisors, the final lawsuit containing the Islamic Republic of Iran's complaint over the (US's) violation of the Treaty of Amity was registered on July 16, 2018", the spokesman noted.

The ICJ was set up in 1946 to rule in disputes between countries. U.S. sanctions against Iran are likely to be raised in his talks.
