Farnborough Airshow: Aircraft sales to hit $6.3tn on China trade

Theresa May will say her controversial Brexit blueprint will safeguard millions of jobs in the aerospace industry as she officially opens the Farnborough International Airshow.

Farnborough, which alternates with the Paris Air Show held every other year at the city's Le Bourget Airport, is also a showcase for new technology and ideas, from flying taxis to space flight.

Rival airframers Boeing and Airbus have both secured deals on day 1 of the Farnborough International Airshow.

Britain is also expected to make a major announcement on future combat air strategy, though Europe's fragmented fighter industry is seen as far from ready to unify around one project.

Airbus announced a mix of orders - some firm, some promised - that would be worth tens of billions of dollars at list prices.

Russian airline Volga Dnepr committed to buying Boeing freighters worth $11.8 billion at list prices, while USA leasing company Air Lease Corp committed to buying as many as 78 Boeing aircraft worth $9.6 billion.

"We have not changed our approach to business because of this", Ashour said. "It would be helpful to USA business if the countries we deal with feel like we have their back and they have our back - that we're partners".

Businesses have been getting increasingly frustrated about the lack of clarity over future trading relations less than nine months before Brexit day on March 29, 2019.

Boeing's vice-president of commercial marketing Randy Tinseth told a news briefing that China looked set to overtake the United States as the world's biggest domestic air travel market in 10-15 years. One in four of Boeing's passenger aircraft went to Chinese customers previous year.

Taiwan's Starlux Airlines, which is developing a network across Asia and North America, said it had signed a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of 17 Airbus planes - 12 A350-1000s and five A350-900s.

On the civilian side, the air show is expected to confirm demand for narrowbody jets from airlines such as Mexico's VivaAerobus, which is shopping for some 40 Airbuses, and lessors like Goshawk, which ordered 20 A320neo jets on Monday but is also expected to be interested in 737 MAX. We had a very massive wave 4-5 years ago with a lot of orders. "I do think, though, with the checks and balances we have in our form of government, that cooler heads will prevail".
