Du Plessis ‘big fan’ of scrapping toss in Tests

In the recently concluded Test against Sri Lanka, de Villiers' absence was sorely felt by the Proteas as they were dismantled by Dilruwan Perera and Rangana Herath at Galle in the first of the two-match series. The biggest weapon that they had was their consistency.

South Africa face a tall order to save the match on a crumbling pitch with plenty of assistance for spin bowlers.

But while you have to be careful not to link too earnestly events in Test and one-day worldwide cricket, renewed, sustained Proteas angst against slow bowling took root again - and educatively on our own, less prodigiously turning tracks - during the ODI portion of India's return visit to these parts last summer. We expected it to be tough coming here. He now has 421 wickets, level with Shaun Pollock and jointly holds the record for most wickets in Tests for South Africa. "We played a warm-up game which was a flat wicket - it didn't spin", du Plessis said.

"Every spinner likes to bowl in Galle". Sri Lanka has more quality spinners.

"We were trying not to let a batsman settle". "I think the numbers would say yes", the South African skipper said. The shape that he has is a lot different than the pace you can practice against. After several inside-edges, du Plessis missed a Suranga Lakmal ball that nipped in and was bowled. "There were one or two more expansive shots than we would normally play, but the thinking behind the batting was to try and put some pressure back on the bowling because they don't give you anything", du Plessis talked of his batsmen's approach in the second innings after the match. In the process, they became only the fourth pair of spinners to open the bowling in each innings of a Test. H Trumble/ M Noble were the first to do it in 1902. He was the only batsman to score over fifty in both innings of the Test and his total aggregate for the match - 218 runs was more than what South Africa could garner in their two innings - 199.

"You nearly think it's worse than what it is".

In contrast, after years of mediocre performances in home series - even when in possession of the famed ICC World No 1 golden Test mace - South Africa have transformed the republic into a fortress with series wins over powerhouses like India and Australia recently.

Sri Lanka s second innings 190 was built on 35 from Angelo Mathews, and a stroke-filled 33 off 46 balls from Lakmal, who came in at No. 9. And he was shown to be a real handful even for the Sri Lanka batters.

6 - South Africa's Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar were stumped in the second innings.
