Kavanaugh is a well-known figure in Washington and has been involved in some of the biggest controversies of the past two decades.

Watch CBN News' FAITH NATION's coverage of the president's announcement.

One Democrat up for re-election in a state Trump won in the 2016 election has already announced that he will oppose the Supreme Court pick ― regardless of the president's choice. Sen.

He tweeted later Sunday that he was looking forward to the announcement and said an 'exceptional person will be chosen!'

A half-hour after Trump is scheduled to appear with his choice in an East Room ceremony, Demand Justice, MoveOn, Indivisible, and People for the American Way will gather at the Supreme Court for a rally in opposition. He is among the best and brightest jurists on the appellate courts with a reputation of being fair and impartial in his decisions.

Conservatives have taken issue with a potential Kavanaugh nomination, with some critics on the right citing his closeness to the Bush 43 administration while others believe he doesn't have a strong enough stance against abortion.

"As I have said, part of my job as Senator includes thoroughly considering judicial nominations, including to the Supreme Court". The president was gleeful when Gorsuch's name didn't leak out early.

"No matter how intense the incoming fire, he'll stand by his legal principles", said Justin Walker, an assistant professor at the University of Louisville who clerked for Kavanaugh in 2010 and 2011.

The American Family Association didn't agree with other conservative groups and is telling its supporters to contact their senators to oppose Kavanaugh's nomination.

Kethledge, 51, has served on the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals since 2008 after also being appointed by Bush.

While conservative on firearms and election financing, Kennedy showed a more progressive streak on issues such as abortion and affirmative action. Kavanaugh actually co-authored Starr's report, which eventually led to Clinton's impeachment, according to The New York Times.

"I hope I'm wrong but I suspect this is going to be a rough tough down in the dirt ear pulling nose biting fight", Kennedy said. He's urging people to make their voices heard, an indirect reference to voicing their objections to senators.

The president said: "Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law".

Outside Trump Tower in Midtown, demonstrators gathered to protest the potential shift of the Supreme Court to the right.

Before announcing his choice, Trump paused a moment to thank Kennedy for a lifetime of service.

Democrats have sounded the alarm that by shifting the ideological balance of the top court Trump could place women's reproductive rights, health care and LGBT rights at risk, and demonstrators gathered at the Supreme Court Monday night in protest at the nomination. "And so I am pretty, pretty excited", said Cornyn. "A judge must be independent, must interpret the law, not make the law, must interpret statutes as written, and must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent", Kavanaugh said. He also praised Kennedy.

The nomination, 12 days after the retirement of Mr Kennedy, gives Republicans their best chance in decades at securing a five-member majority (out of nine) in the highest court in the USA and power to shape legal battles over guns, immigration, the environment and civil rights. The framers established that the Constitution is created to secure the blessings of liberty. Once that happened, I think that the Supreme Court was diminished for decades to come.

Kavanaugh, 53, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, is a favorite of the conservative legal establishment because of his long record on issues ranging from the separation of powers and executive privilege to abortion, immigration and gun rights.
