Amazon Suffers Tech Crash and Strikes During Prime Day

The top-selling item in the USA was the Instant Pot, while the Bosch cordless drill took the title in the UK.

A number of other retailers, from Target to Urban Outfitters, are offering their own deals during Prime Day.

Customers purchased more than 5 million toys-a 1.5 million increase from 2017.

Deals on Prime Day are not available to everyone. Target's one-day sale made Tuesday its most successful sales day of the year.

Amazon says this year's Prime Day was the " biggest global shopping event in Amazon history", with consumers purchasing more than 100 million products.

Online retail juggernaut Amazon's blink-and-you-miss-it deals offered during its first local Prime Day sales event has raised questions about "bait advertising", and how limited a retailer's special offers can be. It recently announced that the cost of Prime membership would go up, and the shopping day is a way to prove the value. Although other retailers have started doing deals in an attempt to keep up, it isn't a recognised multi-outlet sale, but rather a giant free advert for a company which could easily afford to pay us, so we're avoiding it.

This year Prime Day, Amazon's summer marketing event, started on July 16 and lasted 36 hours.

While details on how well Amazon's newest addition, Whole Foods, which it acquired nearly one year ago, did on Prime Day were left out, the company did reveal its best-selling item was organic strawberries. Disappointed shoppers posted screen-grabs of Amazon's error message and said they wanted to buy their favorite protein bars, putting the product and links to its Amazon deal in front of about 20,000 potential new customers.

Making matters worse, it took Amazon several hours before it acknowledged the outage, eventually issuing a statement Wednesday evening.

Amazon has seen similar issues with its Prime two-day shipping and Amazon Fresh services, where customers become very upset if they view the service is in any way falling behind the high bar Amazon has set for itself. Sales exceeded Cyber Monday, Black Friday and last year's Prime Day.
