Producing cars in China will insulate Tesla from the import tariffs that China issued last week in response to those created by the Trump administration.

Ramping up manufacturing in Fremont first is critical to Tesla being able to sustain itself financially.

In May 2016, Musk said he estimated the company would make 100,000 to 200,000 Model 3s during the second half of 2017.
