In May, police in southern Indian state of Kerala have taken a man into custody for allegedly molesting a minor girl inside a cinema hall, according to media reports. The sister informed their parents who lodged a police complaint on July 15.

"An 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted over a period of 7 months at various places inside her apartment campus in Chennai", Police said.

When the police contingent began escorting them back, around 50 advocates flew into a rage and started beating up the accused.

Even after Additional Commissioner of Police H.M.Jayaram, Joint Commissioner of Police T.S. Anbu, Madras High Court Advocates' Association President G. Mohanakrishnan and former president R.C. Paul Kanagaraj held talks with the lawyers, there was no breakthrough until the end of court hours. As the ordeal progressed she was sedated with injections and drug-laced soft drinks, reports said. The officer said that they had videotaped the girl nude and threatened to release it if she told someone about it.

"This continued till the girl on Saturday told her older sister, a college student on a visit home from Delhi, about the trauma she was going through", an officer said. Other men soon joined in, sexually assaulting the child repeatedly.

In 2016, the most recent year for which there are official statistics, more than 100 cases of rape occurred every day in India.

The details of this case are enough to make anyone's blood boil and yesterday, lawyers at the court the men were taken to, could not maintain decorum.

. Repeated headlines about similarly harrowing cases led to the introduction of the death penalty in January for the rape of children under 12, but it seems to have done little to deter perpetrators.

The child, who has impaired hearing, is said to have been attacked at an apartment complex over several months. The victim was taken for a medical examination and a team of senior government doctors who examined her confirmed that she was subjected to sexual assault.
