Mr Trump said he had formed a "special bond" with Mr Kim, who said he and Mr Trump had "decided to leave the past behind".

Chen Xiaohe, an academic from Beijing's Renmin University, says it proves China isn't trying to thwart talks, as a recent tweet from Trump implied.

The president says the country's "biggest enemy is the Fake News so easily promulgated by fools!"

If confirmed, the reported deal could be seen as a concession by Trump since US officials - and the president himself - had called for the North to take swift and clear disarmament measures before receiving any rewards. Trump's claim is dubious considering Pyongyang's significant weapons arsenal.

Pompeo said last week that he would discuss with his counterparts the next steps involving North Korea, in what he described as "an update and [to] underscore the importance of fully implementing all sanctions that are imposed on North Korea".

Moon said that he expects the Trump-Kim talks to "become a historic milestone on the path toward peace away from war".

Critics of Tuesday's bilateral meeting in Singapore and the joint statement that followed cite the fact that North Korea has flouted past joint declarations, and that the word of the dictatorial leader can not be trusted. The president made refueling stops in Guam and Hawaii on his return to Washington.

But confusion grows over what Trump was referring to by stopping "war games" - a term he repeatedly used during post-summit interviews.
