Newsweek reached out to both Mark Sanford and Katie Arrington's campaign team for comment but has not received a response. Sanford told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Rep. Martha Roby, for example, was forced into a runoff last week after her opponents seized on her own rift with the president. Sanford endorsed Ted Cruz (R-TX) during the 2016 presidential primary. In the swing state of Nevada, Democratic Representative Jacky Rosen sailed to the nomination to face vulnerable Republican Senator Dean Heller.

There are three candidates, including Sanford, in the Republican primary. Tim Kaine in the fall. Tim Kaine and choosing nominees in several competitive House races, Nevada and North Dakota choosing their Senate candidates and ME for the first time trying - and voting on whether to keep - a new voting system in which voters rank their preferences, rather than only selecting one.

SC is an open primary state, meaning voters do not need to register with a political party to vote in that party's primary election.

With 1 percent of precincts in the 1st District reporting, Sanford remains in a tight race with Arrington. Arrington has criticized Sanford throughout the campaign for his differences with Trump.

He said he does not regret being critical of Trump.

Then he delivered a scathing rebuke of Sanford's personal life, writing: "He is better off in Argentina". VOTE Katie!,' he wrote.

Trump had weighed in on the contest via Twitter the previous day while on his way back from Singapore. Later, Sanford admitted he was involved in an extramarital affair in Argentina. That refers to 2009, when Sanford's aides said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail while he actually visited a woman with whom he was having an affair in Argentina.

He tweeted: "Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA".

First-term state Rep. Katie Arrington (R-Dorchester) defeated Sanford, earning more than 51 percent of the vote to Sanford's 46 percent.

'She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes.

Arrington has hit Sanford over his disagreements with President Donald Trump. Or for pointing out, as Sanford did, Trump's ignorance about what is in the Constitution and the president's singular lack of transparency in refusing to release his tax returns.

Perhaps sensing he was in political trouble, Sanford started running broadcast television ads in early May and continued until the primary. But I'm guessing that the endorsement put Arrington over the top.
