Meghan Markle's father revealed Monday that Prince Harry told him President Donald Trump should be "given a chance" and that the prince may have been a Trump supporter.

The 73-year-old former television lighting director said he broke the news that his health would prevent him from making the journey just days before the ceremony in Windsor Castle last month.

"They were disappointed but they both said, 'Take care of yourself, we are anxious about you.' They said that the important thing was that I get better".

He said: "Harry asked for her hand on the phone and I said, "You are a gentleman, promise me you will never raise your hand against my daughter, and of course I will grant you my permission".

"Watching it was hard for me, because I wasn't there, but at the same time I'm watching my daughter being watched by the entire world".

Asked about the controversy which made the headlines in the run up to the big day, Mr Markle replied: "I spoke to them both and I apologised". I was very happy about that. Prince Harry, who rescued the new royal when she stumbled as her heel got caught in the grass on the day, could also be seen wearing a blue tie that matched the hue of Markle's dress-if that doesn't say love, then we don't know what does.

"I'm a footnote to the greatest moment in history rather than the dad who walked his daughter down the aisle". I cried a little watching her.

Meghan walked down the first part of the aisle alone, before she was joined by Charles, heir to the throne.

He revealed that he felt "jealous" watching Charles take the arm of his daughter at St. George's Chapel, but added, "I was honoured, I can't think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles".

Wrote one on Twitter, "She's so handsome but good God, she needs a seamstress to fit her clothing to her tiny frame".

"I was thrilled to tears he was doing that, I just wish it had been my hand holding hers not his".
