Controversially, a Best Female Chef award given each year.

The top restaurants list's organisers praised "Bottura's contemporary cuisine, which challenges and reinvents Italian culinary tradition while make use of the finest produce from the Emilia-Romagna region". However, if you want to eat at this restaurant, you better do it soon as chef Gaggan Anand has pledged to close it down in 2020 after 10 years of service.

El Celler de Can Roca, presided over by three brothers in the Spanish region of Catalonia, nabbed second, and Mirazur, run by an Argentine-Italian on the French riviera, came in third.

Spain continued to dominate the line-up with three restaurants in the top 10, including El Celler de Can Roca, while France had two including Mirazur. This award is given to the chef with the most votes from his or her peers.

The top 10 included two Peruvian restaurants, "Central" which slipped to number six from fifth place past year, and "Maido" which climbed to number seven from eighth place. Smyth went on to emphasize the importance of cultivating better kitchen cultures so chefs of all backgrounds can thrive and rise to top positions.

Last year, the number of women who made the list was a shocking three; this is likely why announcer Mark Durden-Smith exclaimed, "It's all about girl power tonight", at the beginning of the June 19 ceremony in Bilboa, Spain.
