A 62-year-old grandmother, Leimome Cheeks, was arrested for transporting her grandchildren in dog kennels in the back of her vehicle.

The children told police there wasn't much air in the kennels and they were very hot.

Leimome Cheeks 62, was arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment.

"It's shocking, it really is", Blake told WATN.

According to Local Memphis, Nikita Blake, another of Cheeks' neighbours, added: "It's very sad".

She told police there had been no room in the vehicle earlier and so she told the children to "get in the dog kennels", according to the Commercial Appeal, though she said she checked on the children "periodically".

Neighbors said Cheeks just bought two German Shepherd puppies that she would put in the kennels in the back of her truck.

It's too early to know the details of the circumstances surrounding Cheeks and the children that were seen in the pet kennels, however further information is expected to be released by authorities soon. Johnson said the children were not in the custody of the Department of Children's Services, but the staff is still "investigating the situation". A phone listing for Cheeks rang unanswered Monday. Another neighbor told Fox 13 Cheeks "loves her grandkids" and that they were "always outside playing with the dogs and stuff". She's such a nice lady.

He aded that the incident could have been an "honest mistake" and that the grandmother should "get help". "If she did that, then that's out of character for her", one neighbor said. Cheeks is scheduled to appear in court today.
