"For China, its best friend has always been Russia, and for Russia, China is a strategic partner, so this award is really a reflection of the special relationship that has existed for a few decades", he said.

In his interview to state-run CGTN, Putin described Xi as "approachable and sincere" and "a very dependable man to work with".

"I believe it's necessary to stop this creative babbling and shift to concrete issues related to real cooperation", Putin told reporters in the Chinese city of Qingdao, when asked to comment on a G7 joint statement.

Since the two presidents' conversation in March, relations between Moscow and the West have worsened, particularly after the poisoning of a former Russian spy in the United Kingdom, which prompted Western countries to expel Russian diplomats. The Skripals were in critical condition for weeks before recovering.

On his 19th visit to China after his recent re-election, Putin held talks with Xi while on his way to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting at Qingdao on Saturday.

Trump said, "I have been Russia's worst nightmare", Trump claimed, "but with that being said, Russian Federation should be in this meeting".

The SCO gathering comes as US President Donald Trump meets America's closest allies in Canada for a two-day G7 summit, which concludes Saturday.

However, during the meeting with Mr. Trudeau, a senior Canadian official said the President agreed to "accelerate" the NAFTA negotiations rather than pursue bilateral talks.

He said he did not discuss a possible meeting venue with Trump but "many" countries including Austria were keen to help in organising such a summit.

Ahead of the annual meeting of G7 leaders, Trump said Russian Federation should be allowed back, a suggestion quickly rejected by Britain, France and Germany.

Its member states also include four former Soviet Central Asian republics, Pakistan and India.

He emphasized the need for the group to closely follow the situation in Afghanistan to fend off the threats posed by militants in the country.

He also resumes his criticism against Canada for unfairly charging tariffs on dairy products heading to the United States.

The location of the Sunday summit, Qingdao, China, is approximately 400 miles southeast of Beijing.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said earlier that Russia's return to the club was out of the question.

The G-7 used to be the G-8, when Russian Federation was a member along with Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, France and Japan. Xi noted that the importance of trade between the two countries is significant beyond its sheer volume due to the strategically important goods exchanged between China and Russian Federation including energy supplies, energy extraction hardware, new environmentally friendly technology, space exploration technology, aviation equipment, terrestrial transport technology and other heavy machinery.

Earlier on Sunday, Putin criticised the U.S. withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal in a speech at the summit.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday criticized US "unliteralism" in withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and said he appreciated efforts by China and Russian Federation to maintain the agreement.
