Several people have been taken hostage in Paris by an armed man.

Photos and videos from the scene showed numerous police vehicles and ambulances at Rue des Petites Ecuries in the 10th arrondissement of the French capital.

"All the hostages are safe and sound", Gerard Collomb said in a brief statement.

Officials at police headquarters would not immediately confirm whether the person holding the hostages was armed or describe the nature of his demands. "The negotiator had difficulty understanding". At least two people had been held. The incident is not believed to be terror-related.
